1. U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center

The U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center is part of the U.S. Army War College. It’s the primary historical research location for the Army. The center is made up of multiple sections including the Army Heritage Museum, the Military History Institute, the Historical Services Division, the War College Library, and more. The center has 16 million military items, including an impressive collection of Civil War photos. It also has exhibits like its Soldier Experience Gallery, where you follow the Army all the way from the Spanish-American War to today. The Army Heritage Trail exhibit features various military tanks and helicopters. 

2. Kings Gap Environmental and Education Training Center

Kings Gap Environmental and Education Training Center is a beautiful state park with tons of opportunities to enjoy the wonderful outdoors. It offers over 25 miles of hiking trails, picnic areas, hunting opportunities, and more. The on-site mansion offers meals and overnight lodging. While staying here, make sure you check out the unforgettable view of the South Mountain and surrounding forests.

3. Carlisle Barracks

Carlisle Barracks is the second oldest active military base in the U.S. The barracks were built in 1757, so they have a long and interesting history. Visitors can take a self-guided tour Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m; however, if you’re visiting without an escort and don’t have a federal government-issued identification card, you’ll have to undergo a background check in order to enter the facility. 

4. Cumberland County Historical Society

In 1873, the Cumberland County Historical Society operated as a library. Today, it’s used as a history and education center, library, museum, and more. Throughout the year, the facility offers walking tours, workshops, lectures, and family-friendly events. When visiting, you’ll enjoy the museum’s 16 galleries featuring a wide variety of art and artifacts that includes many carved animals made by Wilhelm Schimmel. 

5. Bedford Street Antiques

Bedford Street Antiques’ building has operated as a church, a clothing manufacturing company, a flea market, and an auction house, giving it a very interesting history. This quaint antique store has been open since 2003 and now features two floors of over 100 antique dealers. Whether you’re looking for antique furniture, artwork, or toys, Bedford Street Antiques is the perfect place for anyone who love vintage shopping. 

6. Carlisle Theater

The Carlisle Theater was built in 1939 and then restored in 1993. It’s considered “the gem of downtown” in Carlisle and continues to be a popular attraction for those who live nearby. If you’re a fan of performance art, you’ll love a visit to the historic Carlisle Theater. It hosts a variety of cultural events including concerts, performances, films, live theater, and more.
